By 1UP Staff 06/13/2005 Juiced's biggest problem, unfortunately, is that it's a little late to the tuner-culture party. It's certainly feature packed, and it looks pretty sweet, but it fails to offer anything particularly original that hasn't already been done just as well elsewhere. It's a sad situation really, because if the game had been released in its current form when it was originally intended, it would have had a pretty good shot at defining this particular niche. Sadly, the collapse of Acclaim put pay to that ever happening, but I have to say that I have enormous respect for what THQ and Juice Games have done to the game in the intervening months. Therein lies the sad irony though. When Acclaim was ready to ship the thing, it was a shadow of its current self, particularly in both the presentation and handling departments. With the additional development work, it's actually a very solid racer, but has sadly been beaten to the punch by two Need for Speeds, SRS, Midnight Club 3 and arguably even Burnout 3.Like its contemporaries, the gameplay style is very much of the arcade variety, and allows you to throw your whips around with wild abandon. It's not Burnout insane, but the sense of speed is good, and much like Need for Speed Underground, the art style is presented in such a way that it makes things look like they're moving fast, even when you're standing still. The blurriness can be distracting to some, but the most important thing is that when you have the hammer down, and you're hurtling down a street at 80mph, it does actually feel like you're going that fast. To add to the fun, the handling is tuned so that you're not ever going to be bothered by tedious distractions like understeer, as you can quite happily hurtle into a corner, slam on the anchors, whip it round and then screech out the other side with nothing but the requisite tire-squealing noises to distract you. There's a great sense of traction at all times, and the wide variety of cars on offer make some particularly awesome noises, especially when you drop some money on some mods. Similarly, the soundtrack isn't half bad either. There are some excellent remixes, and a broad spread of musical styles which means that it doesn't suffer from the boring plod of Junkie XL in Forza, or the tedious pop-punk of Burnout. There's a lot to like in Juiced. There's an easy-to-manage team racing aspect that allows you to keep a garage full of cars and send other drivers off to events that you don't want to drive personally, and the overall structure of the game is built around a simple-to-understand calendar that lets you easily see everything that are and aren't qualified for. Because of its urban, street culture theme, it is a little stoic and humorless in its presentation, but this doesn't distract from the overall robustness of the experience. The biggest problem is that we've seen everything Juiced has to offer before. If it had been released sooner, or if it were cheaper than full price, it would score higher. But as it stands it's sadly a solid also-ran. A great rental for people that have played all of the alternatives to death already, and are somehow still craving more of the same.
