Karaoke is great fun for groups of people who don’t take themselves too seriously, which generally makes a fun group anyway, but karaoke adds a special entertainment factor into the mix. Though the Japanese word “karaoke” means “empty orchestra” in English, there is definitely something that has been lost in the translation because it is much more than just karaoke machines that entertain. It is the karaoke player who risks their image to others by playfully defiling some of the most popular tunes known to man. Singing a favorite popular song in front of a crowd of friends and strangers is appealing to the drunk Japanese businessman and the strait edge indie rocker alike. Though it can be done anywhere, a dusty bar is the ideal place for karaoke. Plenty of liquored libations help keep the singers singing and crowd happy and the DJ keeps the tunes cued and ready for the next one in an instant. While there are many clubs and bars with dedicated karaoke machines, in most bars it is a weekly affair where a paid karaoke DJ brings their own equipment and sets it up in the bar. A professional set up can run well over a thousand dollars before the speaker system is even considered. High quality karaoke microphones are the same microphones used by performers on stage and sound much better than the cheap microphones that come standard on a home-entertainment karaoke system. These play at home systems are great fun with friends and family but often have a limited selection of songs and poor sound quality but they are incredibly cheap comparatively. There is a new adaptation to the age-old karaoke machine that is taking the gaming markets by storm. Instead of just being able to sing along with the accompaniment of the band there are video games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Star that allow the player to play instruments along to the singing and other sounds. It is basically a glorified video karaoke system that is played in the comfort of home where there is no chance for embarrassment. Watch out karaoke DJs, there is going to be a lot of talented karaoke players when these gamers grow up. Though karaoke is relatively new with its origins in Japan in the 1970s, it has quickly spread to the United States and then the rest of the world. It is made possible with an audio in for the microphone which combines the voice with the pre-recorded arrangement while a sub-code in the audio recording is connected to a monitor allowing the lyrics of the song to be displayed. While these machines were big, bulky and difficult to move in the past, today’s machines are computer programs which can be installed on devices as small as cell phones and easily work on computers and other displays. Some of the most popular karaoke songs are “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield, “Don’t Stop Believing,” by Journey, “Since U Been Gone,” by Kelly Clarkson, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” by Bon Jovi, “Sweet Child O Mine,” by Guns N’ Roses, and “Like a Virgin,” by Madonna though there are many many more to choose from. Or you can always gather 'round the ol piano and belt out some tunes. Digital pianos have become more and more popluar, being they are less expensive and do not need to be tuned. check out a piano store for more information. If guitars are your thing, custom guitars are not much more expensive than one you can just pick up from the store. You can pick up sheet music at these stores or online.
